There’s only Danny Garvey - David F Ross

I first discovered David through his article on playing five a side football. Love Letter to five-aside football . For me it is a beautiful description of the experience. I too played for almost 15 years with a ragged collection of mates and can relate to the blood, sweat and occasional tantrums. Sadly I have had to retire but miss the camaraderie.

I then discovered that David had written a book, There’s only one Danny Garvey based around junior football which also struck a chord. As a much younger man my professional career peaked at half a season playing for Kilwinning Rangers.

This book brought all these memories flooding back. Going to strange little villages, crumbling dressing rooms, no hot water, being shouted at by the locals.

I remember being on the bench, when the manager asked me to warm up. Wearing one of those big subby suits. No crowd of any note, apart from one old man, hand rolled fag in his mouth, collie dog at his feet.

‘Hey son’ - he shouts

I turn to get some encouragement.

‘Yer an ugly bastard’

It explores going back to the town of your birth where nothing has changed but everything has changed.

Although set in football, there is much more to it and explored wider social themes including mental health.

‘A story of irrational hopes and fevered dreams’… ‘ An unforgettable tale about finding hope and redemption in the most unexpected places.
