Toasted Cheese
Ok let’s dive straight in to the debate.
Things it is not:
· A toastie (Irish)
· Grilled Cheese (American)
· Croque Monsieur (French)
· Cheese on Toast (English)
· Welsh Rarebit (Welsh)
Things it is :
· Toasted Cheese
· Roasted Cheese (This what my paisley grandmothers called it, so if it was ok for them)
It is worth pointing out that my Dad used to make a version called Paisley Toasted Cheese. This one involved only toasting on side of the bread. His argument was it saved electricity, but given that this was the only thing he ever cooked it was probably impatience.
Ingredients
2 x Slices of Mothers Pride Scottish Plain Medium Cut Bread
(And to head off another debate, I am fine with both ender or heel to describe the first and last)
A block of Cheddar Cheese, orange in colour and not white
(Never use Low fat, it doesn’t melt properly)
1. Toast one side of each slice and flip over.
2. Cut the cheese in slices, the thicker the more opulent it will be.
3. Grill the cheese, removing at least twice for a spread with a knife.
Personally, I like a bit of white pepper on it. Other acceptable toppings are sliced tomatoes or sliced onions.
It should be served with a cup of tea whilst watching Match of The Day.
